Are you ready for Easter? I have one more last-minute Easter idea … Candy Carrots … easy peasy! Have you tried red licorice dipped in white chocolate or candy coating? The first time I saw it … first thought was no way! After I tasted it … yes way! I was rather surprised. One word of advice … start with fresh licorice, unless you are one of those people who likes really chewy licorice!
I admit that these carrots don’t have a realistic tapered shape … they’re candy … have fun with it!
To make about 14 carrots, you will need …
- 7 thick red licorice sticks (such as red vines)
- 14 strands of green candy grass (such as Twizzlers)(I found it at Target)
- 12 ounces orange candy coating (such as Wilton)(melted according to package directions)
- Line a tray with parchment or wax paper. Use kitchen scissors to cut green candy into 1-1/2″ to 2″ pieces. Make groups of 3 and pinch together at one end.
- Cut red licorice sticks in half.
- Make the opening of the licorice larger – Insert the scissors into the open end of a licorice piece and open the scissors to stretch the licorice – this will cause some splitting, which is OK.
- Dip the open end of the licorice (about 1-1/2″ or 2″) into the orange candy. Hint: don’t pay attention to the photo, dipping a larger portion give you a larger area to hold for step #5! Insert a group of green candy into the opening and lay on prepared tray. Chill for a few minutes.
- Hold the orange end of the carrot and cover the remaining licorice with orange candy. Tap off excess candy coating and lay on prepared tray. Chill for a few minutes.
- Drizzle the candy carrots with orange candy coating, just to add texture. Chill. Excess candy may be trimmed off with a paring knife.
