Baseball is an institution at our house … we watch it on TV … we go to games … my hubby played … our boys played (1 still does) and I make treats! It’s Baseball Season … let’s make some bats & balls!
I think these would be great for Father’s Day, 4th of July, team parties … I tried to make my own “DAD” label on one bat … like Louisville Slugger … I’m not so sure about the results … if I only had a printing press (sigh). This really is a simple project where “double dipping” is a good thing … no party fouls here 😉 You may be able to make more bats and balls with the amount of chocolate that I’ve included in the directions. I am trying to be conservative with the amounts because of the length of the pretzel rods … you may need to spoon the chocolate over the pretzels instead of dipping them. This is what you will need …
- 12 Pretzel Rods
- 12 Large Marshmallows
- 1 lb. White Chocolate/candy melts
- 1 lb. Milk Chocolate/candy melts
- 12 Lollipop Sticks
- Edible Markers (red & black)
- Baking tray lined with wax or parchment paper
Make the balls first because you will use the leftover white chocolate and mix it with the milk chocolate for the bats. Melt the white chocolate, dip the tips of the sticks in the chocolate and insert into the marshmallows, set aside to let the chocolate harden up …
Dip the marshmallow in the white chocolate, tap off excess chocolate and lay the marshmallow on prepared baking sheet … pop in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes to harden the chocolate …
When the chocolate is room temperature again, use the red edible marker to draw “stitching” on the ball …
Now for the bats … Melt the milk chocolate and set aside about 3/4 cup, mix remaining milk chocolate with the leftover white chocolate, stir well to create a light brown color. Dip the pretzel about 3/4 in the light brown chocolate, tap off excess chocolate, lay on prepared baking sheet and pop in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes …
Now for the double dipping … repeat the previous step …
Today was a warm day … my hands were hot, so I used a paper towel to hold the light chocolate end and dip the “hand grip” part of the bat in the milk chocolate that we set aside earlier … back to the fridge …
Now make the “knob” on the end of the “hand grip” … dip in the light brown chocolate and back to the fridge …
Double dip again and back to the fridge …
You could write on the bats after the chocolate is room temperature. Note – You may see “swirls” in the milk chocolate … I don’t know what happened … but I decided that they still looked OK and it didn’t stop anyone from eating them!

I think it’s OK to eat baseball bats while watching basketball and football 😉

I cheered for one grandson’s t-ball team and the other’s Little League team. Other than NASCAR Sprint races, that’s the extent of my sports involvement. Your bats and balls are so clever and laid out so well that any of us could make them!
Keep writing…

I remember when my boys played Little League … it was so much fun … that is how we met most of our friends. Maybe someday we will be back at the Little League field with grandkids.

Absolutely adorable idea! This is our 1st yr in TBall. My daughter is 5 & I am a dugout coach. I wanted to make a special baseball related treat for their last game this week. We’ve already had the baseball cupcakes & cookies. These bats & marshmallow balls are terrific! Thank you very much:)

Thank you Penny! TBall is so much fun … you never know what will happen. I remember watching a kid hit the ball and run to 3rd base 🙂

Update – I made the bats & balls for both my daughters softball & T-Ball teams. From beginning to end (including sealing them in bags & decorating with a ribbon bow) it took 7 hrs! It was worth the time & effort because all the kids & parents loved them. I never have good luck with edible markers. I was practically in tears at one point. I ended up making red frosting & making stitches on the marshmallows with a small Wilton writing tip & frosting bag. Of course it’s 95 degrees this week in Illinois with 100% humidity. Luckily I was able to keep them in the frig at the concession stand. I was so worried about them melting in their hot hands. Everyone at them fast. I used Wilton chocolate discs and they tasted great! Thank you so much for such a clever idea. It was a nice change up to cupcakes, cookies, & ice cream!

I knew you could do it! Great idea to sub red frosting … sometimes edible markers are a pain … I usually have the best luck with Americolor brand. I find it helpful to use a paper towel to wipe the tip if a film builds up and remember to store them in an airtight container or Ziploc bag, tip down. Yeah for the refrigerator!
